Although this is probably old news to some of you, I know majority wonder what millimeter waves are and their uses.
"Extremely high frequency is the International Telecommunication Union designation for the band of radio frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum from 30 to 300 gigahertz. It lies between the super high frequency band, and the far infrared band, the lower part of which is the terahertz band,
One of the controversial areas of 5G development is millimeter wave. However Facebook has used it for high speed data transfer in 20Gbps speed over 13km which is so cool. "
To achieve better internet connections, previously facebook introduced terrestrial connectivity systems of Terragraph and Project ARIES (Antenna Radio Integration for Efficiency in Spectrum). Now facebook introduces the all new technology for better performance. They set a world record data transmission rate of approximately 20 Gbps over 13 km with MMW (MilliMeter Wave) technology.
In the laser communications gimbal and the optical detector in case of clouds and fog, this technology can be used as a reliable backup to free space optical solutions. It states that this will be used as a terrestrial backhaul network to support access solutions such as Terragraph and Project ARIES. So, establishing this technology they have to face several challenges.
It needs a transmitter with a cascade of custom-built MMW components attached to a commercial 2 ft diameter parabolic antenna and the transmitter and receiver should be separated with a distance of 13.2 km in South California.
Also, an Aerial payload is mounted on Cessna aircraft and is being flown at altitudes up to 20,000 ft which test first generation air-to-ground bidirectional link and is capable of 20 Gbps in each direction. It is fully integrated aerial payload with gimbal, capable of 20 Gbps data rate in both uplink and downlink which is tested in 13 km link range and is attached to 4 ft E-band antenna mounted on a 2-axis positioner for autonomous pointing and tracking on the receiver side.
This can be successfully attained only by using 105 watts of DC (direct current).
Facebook said:
The transmission used a bandwidth of 2 GHz, resulting in an overall spectral efficiency of 9.8 bits per second per Hertz
They also said that, in early 2017, the next generation air-to-ground communication system which supports 40 Gbps for each uplink and downlink between the aircraft and the ground station will experiment.
