Vehicle sticker verification system launched to curb forgery
This morning, the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U) has launched a motor vehicle sticker verification system. This follows reports that the movement authorization stickers that essential service providers have been using, have been forged by some unscrupulous individuals.
Following the Covid19 pandemic, the President of Uganda issued a Stay-At-Home advisory to reduce social interaction to help stop the transmission of COVID-19. Only essential service providers were permitted to move so as to keep the light on for critical services across the nation. To aid their movement, these essential service providers were issued movement authorization permits, in form of a motor vehicle car sticker. These stickers are issued out by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The motor vehicle sticker verification system will aid Uganda Police Force and its sister agencies in enforcing the nation-wide lockdown by verifying that the motor vehicles moving are the ones that have been permitted by the Ministry of Works & Transport. In the event that a vehicle sticker has been forged, when the number plate is crosschecked in the sticker verification system, the motor vehicle will be flagged as not authorized to move.
‘Ministry of Works & Transport can be rest assured that this new system will curb all falsification efforts and all forged stickers will be identified instantaneously. I urge all Ugandans to remain law-abiding,’ said Hon Peter Ogwang, State ICT & National Guidance Minister following the commissioning of the system.
The new system has been handed over to the Ministry of Works & Transport and will be hosted in Uganda’s Tier 3 National Data Center to ensure an ‘always on’ experience as it’s used by both Ministry of Works & Transport and Uganda’s security agencies.
NITA-U has called upon the public to heed all the guidelines from Ministry of Health that recommend social distancing of at least 4mteres in public places and limiting unnecessary movements.
